Frieze Patterns

Geometry & Group Theory

This project is the coming together of my life as a mathematician and my work as a creative practitioner. Frieze patterns have existed for centuries as adornments in architecture, pottery and crockery, and clothing. There are only seven groups of symmetries into which all frieze patterns fit.

The idea behind this project is to design beaded necklace wraps for each one of the seven frieze patterns. Symmetrical object have predictability to them, and thus can induce a sense of safety, or calm, in the wearer. I am interested in what sort of symmetry an individual is drawn to, or whether an individual is happy to, or even prefers to reject symmetry altogether,  and chooses to abide in the groundlessness of asymmetry . For instance, could you wear a pair of socks, that differed in colour only at the toe?
